A modern equal-area projection. Area is conserved exactly everywhere, so the multiplier reads 1.00x wherever you drag. The whole cost lands on shape, about 25 times at high latitude.
Why the area reading does not move
Because it is equal-area. Wherever you drag a layer, area distortion is exactly 1.00x. The readout is not broken; that number is the promise this map makes. It never lies about area.
So this page leads with shape instead, and turns the distortion ellipses on by default. Otherwise dragging would look like it had stopped working.
Where the cost lands
On shape. At high latitude the ellipses flatten to an axis ratio of about 25. Every equal-area projection pays this: conserving area and conserving angles at the same time is impossible on a curved surface. It is a result in geometry, not an engineering regret.
